Game Artist

Create the characters, environments, props and effects players see and touch inside a game.

What does a Game Artist actually do?

A game artist builds the visual content of a game — characters, environments, props, UI elements or visual effects — optimised to run in real time inside an engine, not just to look good in a single rendered frame.

That real-time constraint is what makes game art its own discipline: a game artist has to think about polygon budgets, texture memory, draw calls and platform targets (mobile, console, PC) alongside the same sculpting and painting skills a film artist uses.

Most studios split the role further — character artist, environment artist, prop/hard-surface artist, technical artist, VFX artist — and juniors typically generalise before specialising.

A day in the life of a Game Artist

WhenWhat happens
MorningSync with the art lead on the day's asset list and any engine-integration issues flagged overnight.
Mid-morningBlock out or sculpt a new asset (a character, prop or environment piece) to spec.
AfternoonBake high-poly detail to a game-ready low-poly mesh and hand-paint or generate PBR textures.
Late afternoonImport the asset into the engine, check it under real in-game lighting, and fix any scale, shading or performance issues.
OngoingIterate with designers and technical artists until the asset reads correctly at gameplay distance and frame rate.
