It helps but is not mandatory. 3D animation relies more on observation, timing and understanding movement than on drawing skill — many working 3D animators can't draw well. A 2D animation background (like the DAFM diploma) does build a useful eye for timing, though.

A 3D animator takes a rigged character or object and gives it believable, expressive movement — walking, talking, fighting, reacting — frame by frame or through motion-capture cleanup, inside software like Autodesk Maya.

The job sits downstream of modelling and rigging and upstream of lighting and rendering: an animator inherits a ready-to-move asset and hands off a performance, so understanding the whole pipeline (not just the animation window) is what separates a junior from a lead.

Most working animators specialise early — character animation, creature animation, or real-time animation for games — because the reference libraries, timing conventions and tools diverge quickly past the fundamentals.
